WKR at Kitikmeot Socio-Economic Committee Monitoring & Kitikmeot Mayors Forum
Last week, WKR had the opportunity to present to the Kitikmeot Socio-Economic Monitoring Committee, organized by the Government of Nunavut and the Kitikmeot Mayors' Forum, organized by the Hamlet of Cambridge Bay. Both events were held at Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR)'s Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS).
The Kitikmeot Socio-Economic Monitoring Committee (photo at left) was established to monitor the social and economic effects of major development projects in the Kitikmeot region (including WKR's Grays Bay Road and Port, B2Gold - Nunavut's Goose mine, and the Agnico Eagle - Hope Bay project). It brings together governments, Inuit organizations, industry, and community representatives to review data, share community perspectives, and identify ways to maximize benefits while addressing potential impacts of resource development.
The Kitikmeot Mayors' Forum (photo at right) is a regional gathering where mayors and municipal leaders from communities in Nunavut’s Kitikmeot region meet to discuss shared infrastructure, community wellness, funding, and territorial policies. Pictured are Kassidy Koaha Laube, Kugaaruk Deputy Mayor Geido Tigvareark, Kugluktuk Mayor Ryan Nivingalok, Cambridge Bay Mayor Wayne Gregory, Taloyoak Mayor Lenny Panigayak, Gjoa Haven Mayor Raymond Quqshuun and Elliot Holland.
