Chief of the Defence Staff General Jennie Carignan spoke to CBC's Rosemary Barton about Greenland and Canada's Arctic sovereignty and security.
CDS Carignan told Barton that "Our top priority is Canada’s defence and the Arctic ... It is clear that we have billions of dollars of investments in NORAD modernization, new radar, satellites, but also infrastructure going up in the Arctic."
Barton also spoke to NWT Premier R.J. Simpson, who said that "When you look at the circumpolar world, the level of infrastructure in Canada’s Arctic is minimal compared to everywhere else. We are relative undeveloped, including in terms of military installations. That said, in this past six months, things have changed drastically, and we are seeing significant investments into the North, into the Arctic, and a lot of interest in the North and Arctic. The landscape is definitely changing, and I am confident that we are going to see more and more military personnel, equipment, and capabilities, starting immediately. There is work going on right now.”
