Yesterday, Nunavut Premier PJ Akeeagok met with Prime Minister Mark Carney on his first official domestic trip. On this historic occasion, WKR is thrilled to report the wide-ranging support for investing in infrastructure to support Arctic security and sovereignty.
PM Carney announced that "Canada will take on a greater, sustained, and year-round Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) presence in the Arctic – an investment of nearly $420 million to protect our sovereignty across land, air, and sea."
Premier Akeeagok welcomed "investments in nation-building initiatives in the Arctic that address Canada’s sovereignty and security needs while unlocking our economic potential. Projects such as the Arctic Security Corridor, the Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link and the Qikiqtarjuaq Port."
Speaking from Yellowknife, NWT Premier R.J. Simpson welcomed this meeting, remarking that "Advancing the Slave Geological Province Corridor—linking to the Arctic Security Corridor (Grays Bay Road and Port project)—presents a strategic opportunity to integrate the Arctic into the North American road network, strengthen supply chains, and expand access to global markets in partnership with Indigenous governments in the NWT."
