Nunavut Premier John Main issued the following statement on behalf of the Government of Nunavut: "Nunavut stands in solidarity with Greenland and supports its autonomy. Nunavut shares strong cultural, linguistic and familial ties with Greenland and remains committed to maintaining these important relationships. Since 2000, the Governments of Nunavut and Greenland have maintained a close working relationship outlined in formal memoranda of understanding, with a focus on fisheries, ports, mobility, education and culture."
Yesterday, Arctic Ambassador Virginia Mearns announced that the Canadian consulate in Nuuk is now operational, led by Julie Crôteau.
Nunavut and Greenland share the world's longest marine border, as well as a land border. Per the Premier's remarks, cooperation on port development has been a focus of this relationship. Greenland and Nunavut have a timely opportunity to strengthen Inuit sovereignty and security through investments in new ports at Qaqortoq in southern Greenland, Qikiqtarjuaq on Baffin Island, and Grays Bay in the western Arctic.
